NORINE ZAPATA

In my many explorations and representations of different subject matter in my art there has always been one thing that fascinates me. That would be the
continual contrasts between light and dark, substance and illusion.
The form we see is represented and defined by two opposites, shadow and light. I think we as human beings also have these contrasts within ourselves. This
exploration of light and dark is also about trying to understand these dichotomies in ourselves and others.
What fascinates most people is the bright sparkling light of the world. I am
more intrigued by the shadowy, dark and seemingly formless aspects of the
world. I think there is much more substance and knowledge in these places.
Things to explore, understand and learn both about the world and ourselves. cenes, using a background collage beneath several layers of painted plexiglass.

Norine Zapata was born and raised on Cape Cod. In 1969 she moved to Sarasota to attend Ringling School of Art and Design, graduating in 1972 with a major in fine art. Norine has exhibited her work in numerous juried shows on both Florida Coasts. She has been represented by art galleries in North Carolina and Palm Beach, and is currently represented by the Katharine Butler Gallery.
She has several large bodies of work, ranging from traditional landscapes on canvas, and abstract cityscapes on canvas, to three-dimensional wood block constructions of cities. In her latest series "Dimensions of Nature," begun in 2007, Norine is still exploring the many subtleties of color, texture and light in the world around her. This series presents an impressionistic view of natural scenes, using a background collage beneath several layers of painted Plexiglas.
